Having had the pleasure of meeting a grade 6/7 class at Emily Carr elementary school in Vancouver last week, I wanted to show you their art. The artists were an enthusiastic and thoughtful group whose teacher is Ms. Susan Angel.
In the class, we talked about Michael Pollan’s advice: ‘Eat food, mostly plants, not too much.’ We then looked at my list of specific ways to eat sustainably, including: ‘Eat local, eat organic, and eat less meat.’ Hope you enjoy their creative images and words as much as I did.
One Response to “Emily Carr School: Art for Sustainable Food”
Eleanor (Dr. Boyle),
Your presentation to our class was informative, far-reaching and exciting! You gave the students an opportunity to discover important food problems for themselves, first-hand.
We identified and questioned the content of common mainstream foods by reading actual food labels. We studied shopping flyers, then asked questions and made surprising calculations revealing the enormous role meat occupies in our daily diets. We analyzed foods being promoted, often to kids, in colourful food menu ads.
Your striking slide presentation allowed us to glimpse the often hidden and ill-considered aspects of modern agriculture and animal husbandry.
It would be wonderful to see more of this kind of presentation at more schools. Thank you again for your time, commitment and passion on the issues of food sustainability.
Susan Angel
